Photo resizing guide

How to Resize a Photo for an Online Application

Understand width, height, aspect ratio, and file-format requirements.

Check pixels and file size separately

A requirement like 300×300 pixels tells you the photo dimensions. A requirement like maximum 100KB tells you the file size. One does not automatically guarantee the other.

Use the right crop

If you have a portrait photo but the form requires a square, crop to the required composition first. Stretching an image may distort faces and signatures.

Resize your image

  1. Open the image resizer.
  2. Upload your JPG, PNG, or WebP photo.
  3. Enter the required width and height, in pixels.
  4. Keep aspect ratio selected for proportional resizing, or uncheck it only if you explicitly need different proportions.
  5. Download and verify the output file properties.

What if the website still rejects my image?

Read the exact error. Check the extension, allowed format, pixel dimensions, and KB size. Use the image compressor if your image is still too large.

300 × 300 pixels does not mean 300KB

Pixel dimensions describe the number of pixels along each axis. File size describes how many bytes the image occupies on disk. A 300 × 300 JPG can be far smaller than a PNG of the same dimensions; either can vary with image complexity. If a website asks for both 300 × 300 pixels and 50KB, you must meet both rules independently.

Crop, fit or stretch — which one should you choose?

Crop to exact size removes some edges while preserving the shape of faces and objects. Fit with padding preserves the full image, but can add visible borders. Stretch changes the photo proportions and may make a face look unusually wide or tall. For a square headshot, a carefully positioned crop is usually the sensible starting option. If a government or university portal gives a special composition rule, follow that rule rather than a generic preset.

How to verify the saved result

After downloading, inspect the file's Details or Properties on your device. Check width and height separately. If the portal still rejects the file, use the Upload Requirements Fixer to validate the format and maximum size; note that technical checks cannot validate face position, required background color, or platform-specific rules.

Tip: Always rely on the application provider’s published requirements. Example values in these guides are not official rules.
